Edinburgh Review: Matt Kirshen – Shorter Than Napoleon

There’s something missing from Matt Kirshen’s stand up routine. Perhaps it’s the lack of some truly killer lines to get the audience going, or the absence of a central theme to hold the set together; perhaps it’s just the lack of air conditioning in a stifling room that sedated much of the audience. Whatever it is, it certainly left me wanting something more. He’s amiable, enthusiastic and very much at ease on the stage, and you’ll certainly pass an entertaining hour in his company. But all the stage presence in the world can’t mask a lack of great material, and this is a stand-up gig that’s interesting rather than insightful, amusing rather than laugh out loud funny.
